Charles Thorold, Captain, 1st Derby Regiment of Militia, son of B Hart Thorold of Harmston, Lincolnshire, died on 20th July 1855 aged 29. He was taken ill while on parade and was taken in a cab to his apartments in the Market Place, but died shortly after 5pm due to congestion of the lungs.

His funeral on 24 July 1855 was paid for by his colleagues. He was buried with military honours and it was estimated that 7,000 people lined the streets to observe the procession.

A grand monument was erected in December, the first monument in the cemetery. It consisted of a 15 foot high, 6 ton obelisk carved from York stone, mounted on a base with a richly carved wreath. It was sculptured by Joseph Barlow Robinson who also did much of his work at Uttoxeter New Road Cemetery.

Unfortunately, inadequate foundations for the obelisk were put in and the top had to be removed for safety reasons.

Articles in the Derby Mercury the following day, describe the funeral and also a complaint from an onlooker.

Later in the year an article described the monument itself.
