Letters to Heaven 29th November 2024
We were pleased this morning to unveil a Letters to Heaven post box at Nottingham Road Cemetery.
Grief is a journey that each person experiences differently and one way, which may bring comfort, is the act of writing down feelings or sharing thoughts on paper, whether that is on the day of an important anniversary or any other day of the year.
We hope that this post box can help people in some small way.
It is available for use by anyone, not just those with relatives here.
It was nice that people came and used it straight away.
Thanks to Central Co-op Funeral and Wathall's - The Funeral Directors for their help and support and to BBC Derby for attending and giving us coverage.

Update 30th January 2025
Today we received this message from the cemetery team.
"We have today had the first collection from the Letters to Heaven post box. There were an incredible 115 items in the box, including several children’s drawings and 3 letters to Santa (we hope he got the messages).
We had letters posted to the cemetery office from as far away as Scotland with requests for us to post them in the box on their behalf.
Although we do not open and read the letters, one letter had writing on the outside of the envelope expressing gratitude to their teacher and shared some special memories from the person’s school days. This shows it’s not just family members that are being remembered.
The post box is obviously providing comfort for many people and is exceeding our expectations after only 2 months. We hope it will be well used for Valentines day and moving forward throughout the year for Birthdays, Mother’s day, Father’s day and Baby loss awareness month in October".
It is nice to see it being well used and appreciated.
