The weather was kind to us on Saturday 18th April 2026, as two identical plaques were dedicated to remember all the babies and children buried in the cemetery who have no memorial of their own.

A small group met at the chapel and then proceeded to both areas for short dedications led by celebrant Tracey Grice.

These are the words spoken by Tracey:

"Thank you for being here to share this moment of remembrance. We gather here today at Nottingham Road Cemetery to dedicate this plaque to the memory of the many babies and children buried here.

This cemetery opened in 1855 and has been a place of rest, remembrance and reflection for generations. Among those buried here are many babies and children, some known by name, many without a headstone or individual memorial, but all part of the history of this place. Some lived only a very short time. Some were known only to their families. Yet every child mattered, and each one is part of the story of this ground.

These plaques stand so that no child buried here is without remembrance. They offer a place to pause, to reflect and to acknowledge lives that were brief but not forgotten.

Across the years, love and grief have been carried quietly by families and by this cemetery itself. Today we honour that love. We recognise that every child remembered here was, and remains, deeply valued.

We are grateful to the Derby Association of Community Partners for funding these plaques and helping to ensure that the children buried here are remembered with dignity and care.

We now dedicate this plaque to the enduring memory of the children buried in Nottingham Road Cemetery. May it stand as a sign of respect, remembrance and quiet reflection for all who come here. Let us take a moment of silence as we remember them.

These children are part of this place and part of our shared memory. They are remembered. They are not forgotten. This plaque is now dedicated to their eternal memory."

Special thanks to Horobin Memorials for making and installing the plaques, and to George Simnett Family Funeral Directors for the beautiful wreath.

We are also grateful to Central Co-op Funeral for their continued support at events such as this.

We shall add some bulbs in both areas later in the year.
