Railway Servants Orphanage

///marked.heads.float

Never assume that a headstone gives details of those buried in a particular grave. This headstone details children from Railway Servants Orphanage (St Christopher’s Home) buried in the cemetery.

The headstone makes it clear that it commemorates the children buried in the cemetery not in this grave. They were buried in unpurchased graves, shared with unrelated people, where a headstone could not be erected.

This grave plot was purchased by the orphanage in 1908, so the orphanage was able to erect a headstone to:

  • Richard Fletcher aged 9 who died on 10/12/1889

  • John Sawyer Steptoe aged 10 who died on 23/9/1893

  • George Thomas Brammer aged 12 who died on 23/5/1894

  • William Cooper aged 10 who died on 15/7/1901

  • Leona Grace Price aged 12 who died on 3/1/1904
