James Herbert Ambrose was born 12th November 1924 to David and Mary Ambrose of Derby. During WW2 he joined the Royal Navy in 1942 serving as an Able Seaman at HMS Squid, a tank landing craft repair base in Southampton.
On D-Day, 6th June 1944, he served on board LCT3627, a Mk5 tank landing craft, that landed the 49th Engineers C Battalion at Utah Beach. A photograph of LCT3627 during the D-Day landing is within the Imperial War Museum collection.
James died whilst on leave on 9th October 1944, at Coldeast Emergency Hospital, Salisbury Green, Southampton, Hampshire, England, from a cerebral abscess, aged 19.
