Died 02/12/1914, Infirmary, Stoke on Trent, Age 25. Private, Grenadier Guards, 4th Bn. Service Number 13426. Son of Mrs. Emily Chatterly, of 11, Loudoun St., Derby.
Ernest Edward BAILEY was born in the summer of 1890 the only child of John Edward Bailey and Emily Bailey (nee College) of 34 Yates Street Litchurch. In 1893 his mother Emily was widowed and in 1894 was married to John Stenson, they had a daughter Annie Stenson. Ernest Edward Bailey was educated at Peartree School (Later Hardwick Boys). Emily was widowed for a second time and in 1904 married John Chatterley. The family later lived at 31 Roe Street and at 24 Rose Hill Street, Derby. Before enlisting Ernest Edward Bailey was a labourer in the Midland Railway’s cleaning sheds in Derby. He was wounded in the Battle of Ypres and was repatriated to the North Staffordshire Infirmary, Stoke on Trent, where he died on 2 December 1914. On 4 December 1914 his body was given a military escort to Stoke railway station and returned to Derby for the funeral service at the United Methodist Church, Dairy House Road and burial in Nottingham Road Cemetery on 6 December 1914. This cenotaph was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens who also designed the Whitehall Cenotaph in London.
