Died 15/03/1917 Age 27. Private, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), " B " Coy. 3rd Bn. Service Number 10604. Son of Samuel and Emma Bryan, of 43, Stockbrook Street., Derby.
His brother, Rifleman Arthur Bryan, Kings Royal Rifle Corps, Service Number 3237, also fell. Died 10/03/1915 Age 32.
Samuel BRYAN was born on 27 December 1889 and his birth was registered in Derby in the spring of 1890. His parents were Samuel Bryan and Emma Bryan (nee Taylor) who married on 18 May 1874 at St Peters Church in Derby.
The 1891 Census has his family living at 3 Robinsons Yard, Bridge Street, Derby, with Samuel the youngest of their five children.
By 1897 Samuel BRYAN was a pupil at St Johns School, Derby.
Samuel BRYAN first enlisted into the Army Service Corps, Service number 25704, on 28 October 1907 but was soon discharged on 29 November 1907 as being under age. His parents were then living at Court 6, House 2, Bridge Street, Derby. Samuel then enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 14 Jan 1908.
The 1911 Census found Samuel BRYAN as a Private in the 2nd Sherwood Foresters at the Tregantle Fort Barracks at Torpoint, Cornwall. Meanwhile his parents were recorded as living at 27 Noel Street, Derby.
On the 18 June 1912 Samuel BRYAN was convicted of using obscene language by a civil court, as noted in his military record.
Early in WW1, Samuel BRYAN was injured on 2 Sep 1914 in France by gunshot wounds received in action, a bullet entering his right wrist fracturing his carpel bones. His military medical records show that the injury rendered his right hand useless, unable to hold a rifle, and eventually he was discharged from the army on 16 March 1915 as being unfit for war service. His address was given as 14 Warner Street Derby.
In January 1916 Samuel BRYAN and another disabled soldier were convicted at Derby Magistrates Court for being drunk and disorderly, his address was given as Warner Street, Derby.
He died in the Derby workhouse infirmary on 15th March 1917 aged 27, of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. He was buried in Plot AF24/*/20011 at Nottingham Road Cemetery on Sunday 19th March 1917. His death announcement records his address as 11 Grey Street, Derby.
The 1921 Census shows his father and mother, Samuel and Emma Bryan, still living at 43 Stockbrook Street, Derby.
His brother, Rifleman Arthur Bryan, Kings Royal Rifle Corps, Service Number 3237, also fell, died 10/03/1915 Age 32.
